Walls are where a house leaks air in ways you rarely see: around outlets and switch boxes, at the top and bottom plates, where wiring and plumbing pass through framing, and around window and door rough openings. Fiberglass batts slow heat but leave those paths open, and in a windy Oklahoma winter that shows up as drafts and cold exterior walls.
Spray foam wall insulation fills each stud cavity from the back of the sheathing out, sealing every gap and wire hole as it expands. It is the right tool when the walls are open: new construction, room additions, garage conversions, and remodels where old plaster or drywall has been taken down to the studs. It turns each wall into an insulation layer and an air barrier at the same time.
Every wall project starts with a free estimate. For builders and homeowners managing new construction, we schedule around rough-in inspections and other trades so the foam goes in after electrical, plumbing and HVAC are inspected and before drywall.
TipSpray foam needs open walls. For finished walls in an older home, spray foam is not the right product. Dense-pack cellulose or a specialty injection foam installed through small holes is usually the better path, and we will tell you so honestly.
Signs You Need Wall Spray Foam Insulation
- You are building a new home, addition or barndominium
- Walls are opened to the studs during a remodel
- Exterior walls feel cold to the touch in winter
- Drafts at outlets and switch plates on outside walls
- A converted garage or porch room that never stays comfortable
- Noise from outside or between rooms is a problem
Choosing Foam for 2x4 and 2x6 Walls
Open-cell foam fills a 2x4 wall at about 3.5 inches for roughly R-13, and a 2x6 wall at about 5.5 inches for roughly R-20. It is the most affordable spray foam option for walls, it is excellent at reducing sound transmission, and it is the most common choice for interior-conditioned walls in new homes.
Closed-cell foam reaches about R-13 at 2 inches and adds racking strength and a vapor retarder. It makes sense on walls that face moisture, on below-grade or knee walls, in metal-framed and barndominium walls, and anywhere you want the most R-value in the least depth. Many builders use a hybrid: a closed-cell layer for air and moisture control, then a less expensive fill.
